Long Divison!!

Posted by merrylenz on 27th October 2006

Dear Parents,

I’m am teaching long division using a method that was not used when you were a fifth grader.  I’m using it because it helps students understand the process better. This method is called “Long Division using Partial Quotients”.   Once learned, this method is much easier and provides fewer opportunities for mistakes.  Rather than just teaching mindless steps, this method encourages students to think.

Here’s an example:

9,461 divided by 5

First students try dividing by 1000 because the dividend is in the thousands and the divisor is a single digit.

5 x 1000 = 5000

Then students subtract:  9461 – 5000 = 4461

Now students will divide using 100’s

Because 5 goes into the first 2 digits of 4461 (44) 8 times

we’ll multiply by 800              800 X 5 =  4000

Now subtract:  4461 – 4000 = 461

Now we will divide by 10’s.  Because 5 goes into 46 (the first 2 digits of our new problem) 9 times we will multiply by

90 x 5 = 450

Subtract again:  461 -450 = 11

Now by single digits:  5 goes into 11 two times

so 5×2=10

Subtract:  11-10=1 which is the remainder.

NOw add up all the number we divided by: 1000 + 800 + 90 + 2 = 1892 R 1

I would appreciate it if you would encourage your child to open their minds to this method.

Rainy Day Fun

Posted by merrylenz on 12th October 2006

Below are some responses by my students when we took hold of an opportunity to make boats and sail them down the gutter outside our door.  Please feel free to respond to them.

When I was out there watching the boats I thought it was so cool to watch how fast the boats were going and how the water just picked them up like a feather and it weighed nothing.   –Ashley S.

When we went outside we made little boats and raced them down the water by the side of the road. –Corrie

 Boat Sailing

Today I made a paper boat and mine sank.  It was fun to take a break.  They floated because it was light.  Amazing.  No really. –Chance

I thought that it was really fun and everyone always need a little fun.  thank you for all of the fun.  PS  You wouldn’t get in very much trouble if someone caught you because it’s science stuff. –Marisa

When I was taking advantage of a moment in this case a sream, I made a paper boat but instead mine just sunk.  But it was still very fun. –Kody

Today when I was reading when everyone started making boats.  I do not know why but they were.  So I went and watched.  There was a flowing stream in the street and everyone was making boats and letting them go.  I made one and I went GREAT.  Thank you Mrs. Lenz.  I really enjoyed it.  It was a fun experience. –Ashley P.

I came up with an idea when I was at school watching the rain fall.  I said, Hey, Mrs. Lenz, can I make a paper boat and ride it in the big puddle?  She said yes.  Then we took them outside and raced. –Zach

Today we went outside and put tiny little paper boats in the stream by the road from the rain.  I didn’t make one because I didn’t know how.  I missed out on a lot of fun.  But I still watched everybody else’s boats sail away.  So I had some fun.  I was happy that we got to go outsdie and do something fun.–James

On October 11th, Zack seen that is was raining out and that there was a big long stream on the side of the road.  Almost half of the class wanted to make a boat and race it down the side of the road.  I made the cup that my mom taught me and tipped it upside down.  A few people wanted me to make them one.  Mine beat Chelsea’s.–Paige

“Yes!” I said, “the MEAP is finally over for the day.”  We just got done doing MEAP reading and now it was break time.  Kacey, Chelsea and I were playinga game but then some kids asked if they could go outside and make some boats and make them fly down the big stream.  So we stopped playing the game and everyone made a boat and went outside to race.  I didn’t win but I still thought mine was the fastest. –Abby

Today my class seized the opportunity to go outside and make some paper boats.  The cool thing was that it didn’t have to be perfect or by the book, so to speak.  But it was fun, a break in life.

The thing is, that moments like this happen every day and if we don’t watch out for them or take a chance, well wouldn’t life be pretty boring?  So live your life, take a chance once in a while, and maybe, just maybe life might not be so boring.

Kacey

I got to make a boat and see what happens when it went down the stream.  Mine was fast.  It is cool that paper didn’t soak in the water. -Jayson

Take advantage of taking time to have fun activities.  I think we should do it more often but most people don’t do it.  Everybody’s worked good but I think the chinese football worked the best.–Rayelle

I seen the water.  I made a boat.  We took it outside in the ater.  The water sucked it in the water. –Mitchell

I saw the water wondering what they were doing.  So I went inside and made a boat.  I put it in the water. “Bye,” I said, “float away.”  Then it sunk.  “Man!” I said.  I walked away.

Chelsea

Today in our classroom we saw a flowing stream on the side of the road.  Our teacher Mrs. Lenz let us make a boat.  Only a few people didn’t make one.  After we made boats we got to let them flow in t he stream.  All of ours went pretty fast.  My boat was purple.  Today we got a good opportunity to have fun outside after it rained.  What a good teacher!–Whitney

Geography Final Project

Mrs. Lenz

Students will be using the 5 themes of geography—location, place, human environment interaction, movement, and regions to describe a country from which your family originates (not US).  Students will be creating a mobile containing information about that country.  Here is a timeline to help your child complete this project on time.

October 4—Pick a country from which your family comes.

October 5—Describe the location of that country including its latitude and longitude and what it’s near.

October 9—Describe the human and physical characteristics of that country—what makes it special—mountains, rivers, cultural differences

October 10—Describe human/environment interactions in that country.

October 11—Describe how ideas, people, and products move into and out of that country.

October 12—Describe what region this country is a part of—(eastern Europe) (east asia)  Tell what countries border your country.  What human and physical characteristics of that region.

October 13—Find or create 3 maps—1 political, 1 elevation, 1 climate of your country

October 16–Mobile needs to be completed and hung up.
