End of 2nd MP Writing Assignment

Posted by merrylenz on 28th December 2005

Students need to write about a time when they were sad and someone made them feel better.  They need to have a clear beginning where the problem is introduced, develop the problem (attempts to make things better), and a conclusion when the problem is resolved.

Reading Help

Posted by merrylenz on 27th December 2005

I have students of varying abilities in reading.  Some students could benefit from reading aloud with someone who can help them with decoding and monitor their comprehension by having them retell what they’ve read.  Our reading time is from 9:30-10:10.  If you’d like to come read with a child, please let me know what days you are available.

Falcon of the Month

Posted by merrylenz on 27th December 2005

Falcon of the Month for November 2005

The Falcon of the Month for November is Shelby Brown.  She was selected out of 125 fifth graders.  She is an excellent student leader and citizen.  Shelby and her parents shared what being selected Falcon of the Month meant to them with Rotary Club on Tuesday, November 22.  The following is Shelby’s acceptance speech:

“When I found out I had been chosen Falcon of the Month it didn’t seem real.  When it finally sunk in, I got so excited!  I really appreciate Mrs. Lenz noticing how hard I try to be responsible with my school work and respectful to my classmates.  Fifth grade has so far been full of challenges and changes.  I feel very lucky to have Mrs. Lenz as a teacher because she helps me find my way.  I want to especially thank my parents for being great role models and supporting me during the school year.  I would like to thank the Rotary Club for sponsoring the Falcon of the Month program and Mrs. Lenz for selecting me. Thank you.”

I See Art

Posted by merrylenz on 27th December 2005

Thanks to Mrs. Stinson–we will be participating in the I See art program. Students will learn about two new works of art each month.

Starry Night and Blue Atmosphere

Van Gogh’s finest works were produced in less than three years in a technique that grew more and more impassioned in brushstroke, in symbolic and intense color, in surface tension and in the movement and vibration of form and line.  The artist was completely absorbed in the effort to explain his struggle against madness and his comprehension of the spiritual essence of man and nature.

Helen Frankenthaler - Blue Atmosphere - Art Prints and Posters

This is Helen Frankenthaler’s First in acrylic paint, is filled with overlapping, billowy forms in strong reds and blues, held and separated from the white unstained section of the canvas by dark blue shapes.  Abstract expressionism.

Mona Lisa and Senora Sebasa Garcia
This month we started our “I See” art appreciation program.  Our docent is D’Andrea Stinson.  We saw a painting and discussed the style of Leonardo DaVinci.  The children shared their observations of “Mona Lisa.”  In contrast, we looked at Francisco Goya’s painting “Senora Sabasa Garcia.”

Mona LIsa ”Mona Lisa” is one of the most famous paintings in the world.  Leonardo worked on this painting for four years.  Beleiving in idealization, he used another model for the hands and torso, thus making a composite painting.  This work has caused more speculation than any other in the history of art and has been written about by art critics, poets, and authors; all of whom are fascinated by her smile.

Senora   Francisco Goya was one of the greatest and most original Spanish painters. “Senora Sabasa Garcia” is a magnificent portrait in which clarity of the drawing of the face and hair contrasts with the soft draping of the shawl that captures the light in delicate impressionistic brushstrokes.
